ABOUT US

The Metro Swim Officials Association is an organization of high school swimming and diving officials. We service swimming and diving meets in the Southeast portion of Wisconsin. Our membership works with (but is not limited to) schools in the following conferences, Milwaukee City, Greater Metro, Southeast, Woodland, Classic 8, Wisconsin Little Ten, North Shore.

The first "organizational" meeting was held on November 15, 1979, at Wauwatosa West High School. The meeting was held to find and contact all registered WIAA and AAU officials. The first "official" meeting was held in January, 1980.

The Constitution of this new organization stated the following purposes:

1. To promote competitive swimming and diving in Wisconsin through better officiating.
2. To standardize officiating techniques.
3. To promote a standardization of rule interpretation.
4. To provide an opportunity to foster the development of beginning officials.
5. To provide and maintain a roster of qualified and available officials for interested parties.

The charter members still have several active officials working meets in the Metro area. Charter members include: Dan Benson, Gary Bork, Morgan Byers, Bob Christensen, Bernie D'Amico, Gary Dowd, Sy Drzewiecki, Roy Fuhr, Bill Gouge, Carol Huf, Henry Kleppek, Gerald Lesiecki, Roger Mueller, Peter Murphy, Jr., Dale Olsen, Ken Oudenhoven, Chuck Reichert, and William Ritter.

The inaugural Memorial Award started in the spring of 1984. One hundred dollars was given that year as "The Jackie Lesiecki Memorial Scholarship Fund". Jackie was a former swimmer at Greendale High School whose father was a member of the association. Jackie was killed in a tragic auto accident in Kansas. Additional names of swimmers and officials who have died have since been added to the name of the Memorial Award.

In 1991, the award amount was raised to $150.00 through 1996, when two awards were given; one to a boy and one to a girl. In 2001, the Metro Swim Meet was created to raise more funds for the Memorial Award. The meet was co-hosted by the MSOA and Homestead High School under the organization of Roy Fuhr. In 2001, the award amount was raised to $400. In 2005, the amount was increased to $500.Starting in 2010, the amount and number of awards was determined by funds raised throughout the year.

Our group meets four times annually. All meetings take place on Monday evenings. Our first meeting takes place in the summer before the start of the girls swimming season. At this meeting we review any rules changes implemented by the NFHS and/or WIAA and set goals for the coming year. Two meetings take place during the swimming seasons to discuss what is happening at meets we have worked. Our final meeting takes place on the Monday after the Boys State Swimming Meet. At this meeting, we review our accomplishments from the previous year.
